First International Symposium on Cancer Research

Cancer in Children and Adults: Advances in the Understanding of the Basic Mechanisms and Development of Therapeutic Strategies

The purpose of this first symposium was to celebrate and publicize several important developments in biomedical research in San Antonio. First, year 2000 was the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Texas Research Park and the dedication of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Institute of Biotechnology. Second, the symposium coincided with the inauguration of a new Video Conference Center and the dedication of the South Texas Centers for Biology and Medicine. Last, this symposium recognized the planned Children’s Cancer Research Center.

Second International Symposium on Cancer

Frontiers in Cancer Research: A Molecular Perspective

The Second International Symposium on Cancer Research entitled “Frontiers in Cancer Research: A Molecular Perspective” was held in the Texas Research Park in San Antonio, Texas from October 12-14, 2002. It provided an interactive environment for the nourishment of the scientific spirit. Twenty-four speakers from around the world presented their work at this event which promoted stimulating and enthusiastic discussions on topics including Genomic Instability and Cancer, Cell Cycle Regulation and Checkpoints, DNA Repair and Recombination, DNA Replication, Signal Transduction, and Chromatin Remodeling.

Future Symposiums

The faculty of the Department of Molecular Medicine fully support continuing this effort, and have proposed a symposium to be held in 2005.
