Requirements for Admission

Students beginning graduate study ordinarily matriculate during the fall session. Applicants must submit scores on the Graduate Record Examinations Aptitude Test (GRE), certified transcripts of all college and/or postgraduate work, a statement from the applicant indicating his or her objectives in graduate study, three letters of recommendation, and if applicable score for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution with a minimum grade point average of B (3.0 in a 4.0 system). In addition, applicants must have credit for the following courses:

  • Biology* (2 years);
  • Chemistry* (1 year of general inorganic and a course in organic chemistry);
  • Mathematics (a minimum of 1 semester of Calculus);
  • Physics* (1 year).
  • *These courses should include laboratory experience.
Furthermore, Analytical and Physical Chemistry, as well as Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, are strongly recommended.



Application Process

The Department requests the following items be submitted to the Registrar's Office-Graduate Admissions by February 1st. Applications submitted after the requested deadline (February 1st) will still receive full consideration, provided that all positions have not yet been filled.

  • On-line application. Applicants must apply using the on-line application.

  • Official transcripts of all college and/or postgraduate work. Applicants may submit an incomplete transcript with their application and later submit a complete official transcript.

  • Statement from the applicant indicating his or her objectives in graduate study.

  • Three letters of recommendation. The reference form can be downloaded at http://studentservices.uthscsa.edu/Publications/graduat.html.

  • GRE. A minimum score of 1,000 for the combined scores on the verbal and quantitative portions of the Aptitude test is required. Scores on tests taken more than five years prior to the date of application are not acceptable.

  • TOEFL. Applicants from countries were English is not the native language are required to submit the TOEFL. A minimum score of 560 is required on the paper test. A minimum score of 220 is required on the computer-based test. A minimum score of 68 is required on the Internet-based test. Scores on TOEFL tests taken more than 2 years prior to the date of matriculation are not acceptable.

GRE and TOEFL scores should be sent directly to the Registrar's Office at the above address by the Education Testing Service (ETS). The Code No. to use for both the GRE and TOEFL is R6908.
